The deep dive — The best team in the world?
The clearest identity in international football and the trophies to back it up: European champions in 2024, Nations League before that. They will have more of the ball than you no matter who you are, the midfield pool is ridiculous, and Lamine Yamal is the most gifted player Spain have produced since the golden generation. Rodri is back from the injury that wrecked his season, which matters more than any other single fitness story at this tournament.
The market has caught up with Spain. Backing them now is an opinion on Rodri staying fit and the young legs handling eight matches.
Why they can win it
- They impose their game on everyone. Nobody has out-passed Spain in a match that mattered for years.
- Rodri fit is the difference between a very good Spain and one that wins the whole thing.
- Yamal at 18 already decides big games on his own, and fullbacks still haven't worked out what to do when he cuts inside.
- Group H is gentle at the top end, and Spain traditionally grow into tournaments rather than peaking in week one.
Why they can't
- There is still no reliable No.9. When the carousel meets a deep block and someone has to finish the 0.3 xG chance, the old question comes back.
- The young core has played brutal club minutes for two straight seasons, and Spain have never carried the favourites tag this heavy.
- Afternoon heat blunts pressing more than it blunts blocks. Spain without the press are still good, but they're mortal.
Rodri. With him Spain win everything. Without him they're beatable. No single player changes his team's ceiling more.
Yamal's second act. Defences have had two years to study him. This summer we find out whether he's already moved on again.
Verdict: The bookies' favourite and the model's number two. If Rodri plays all eight games Spain probably win it. That 'if' is the entire bet.
